Lab rotations in cryo-EM

The group of Dr Oleksiy Kovtun at MPI NAT searches for students interested in proteins/membranes, wet lab and/or computational methods and are willing to join the group for a lab rotation.

The group of Dr Oleksiy Kovtun at MPI NAT use cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-
EM) to visualise the structure and organisation of molecular machines, see PubMed papers
PMID 32743075, 30224749, 33762348. We currently offer laboratory rotations. We
have a range of projects unravelling molecular machines of intracellular trafficking that will
suit candidates interested in proteins/membranes, wet lab and/or computational methods.

Techniques at a glance:
Wet lab:

  • molecular cloning
  • protein purification
  • on membrane reconstitution and binding assays
  • sample preparation for cryo-EM

Computation methods:

  • cryo-EM data analysis in Linux environment
  • scripting in bash, python and Matlab
  • protein structure and interaction prediction with AI tools (AlphaFold2)
